Section outline

  • Welcome to the course Social Innovation – Responsible Consumption!

The world’s current food system is not as resilient and sustaining as it could be for our families, communities, businesses, and environment. Environmental costs of food production, packaging, and transport are enormous—methane emission, water consumption, deforestation - to name a few. And yet, one-third of global food production for human consumption is lost or wasted.

Our big question is how to design a more sustainable food system for everyone.

    • How can we reduce waste by rethinking our relationship with food?
    • How can we leverage data to reduce food waste in our homes?
    • How can we shift eater behaviours?
    • How can we use evidence-based approaches to influence daily consumer choices?

  • We are delighted for you to participate in this new online course for students who want a more sustainable future for all. "Food for thought: too good to waste?" will enable you to reflect on everyday decisions, unconscious habits, and behaviours from social, environmental, and economic angles.

Your experience will be social, cutting-edge, and digital to enable you to easily incorporate course activities into your day-to-day schedule. Resources, such as thought-provoking articles and videos, will promote networking with colleagues around Europe. And you will participate in virtual facilitated sessions via this platform (Howspace). All these elements are designed to provide you each week with immediate application and real, practical results.

For the next four weeks we will try to find answers to four questions listed above. We will search for data in reliable sources, analyse them, discuss different consumer choices, and their costs and benefits for individuals, environment, society, and economy. We are going to examine our own everyday consumer choices and try to make our lifestyle more sustainable. We will take a test to check what our food-related individual carbon footprint is. And finally, we will create a food rescue project. It will be an eye-opening and exciting journey!

By participating in this course, you will gain a thorough understanding of the complex interconnections between food loss and waste, food production, agriculture, environment, and well-being of societies.

In the online course "Food for thought: too good to waste?", you will build essential critical skills and:

    • Develop systemic thinking

    • Strengthen interpersonal skills

    • Develop and implement strategic collective action

We thank you in advance for your active participation in this course. We look forward to sharing this experience with you!

  • In this module we are going to focus on two questions:

How can we curtail waste by rethinking our relationship with the food?

How can we leverage data to reduce food waste in our homes?

After completing this module you  will be able:

    • to relate food-related consumer choices to the global problem of food waste,
    • to discuss the challenges and limitations of sustainable food systems in everyday life.

    • WORK ON THE PLATFORM

    • Have you ever wondered what impact food production has on the environment?

If not, it's high time to start😁

Watch a short presentation and draw your own conclusions!

    • We already know, and the data unquestionably confirm that consumer choices, especially in developed markets, have an enormous impact on the environment, society, and economy. By making food-related behaviour more sustainable, we can make a big difference. Please take a closer look at six consumer choices that are relatively easy to implement in everyday life.
